Just noticed Terry Nuggethead posting at Tuesday, May 09, 2006 at 15:45:00
The original 'Darren', the one who christened all other Darrens 'Darren'.
Terence 'T.' Nuggethead (as he is known to his friends, though not sure what the 'T.' stands for but can guess) witnessed the recording of 'Vegetate', and even then we knew Mr. and Ms. Shaw were as brilliantly insane as the day is long. Some would say they missed the boat, some would say they sank it and some would say it had to happen that way. Either way they're still recording and it seems a lot of people have a near religous & life-changing experience with Shawchoons. It sure happened to me too and then some. Think they've got a vast cache of mind-bending unreleased material, accumulated over 20 years? Me too. Perhaps that's where the REALLY good stuff lurks. Shame. True talent is delivered in unfathomable ways. Think it's about time they started taking it seriously though!

Their Dreamy Ambience captured me in early 2000, after spending some time with a witch, who was also keen to turn me on to such rare, beautiful, and profound groups like, sigur Ros, Portishead, Massive Attack, Slowdive, The Essence, Black tape for a Blue girl. This unique sound was a big influence and made its mark on me a singer, and songwriter. Still today.. . feel the Cranes are one of the most talented, prolific bands today. I would be thrilled to co-write, or collaborate with such a group. My life long desire is to write and perform music full time. Love the ambient, dark dreamy songs! - B. When i first heard of you it was back in 1992. I was very much into (all kinds of) psychedelic music and friend of mine (a beautiful gipsy) thought it would be a good idea to let me hear the song 'Starblood'. I went crazy on that one. Yet it took two years for me that the desire for 'Wings....' took shape enough for me to go to the store and buy the album. But then for some mysterious reason 'Wings of Joy' disappeared from the stage in the recordstores. The longing for the album grew -in the meanwhile saw you playing live on several occasions (with the Cure for example),bought other albums witch made the longing for 'Wings' only stronger. So much that it became a kind of myth to me. But then......internet came into my life. One of the first things i did was googling with 'Wings'. And i found it. After thirteen years of searching i was not able to forget the impression you made me.
In the mean while i bought 'Future songs'......and whát a difference! Already found your 'songs of silence' fulfilled with so much beauty. Now on future it was all captured within this atmosphere! So much life to be found within the achings, prayers and joy in the songs......
Just Wanted to say this.....I hope you'll come to the Netherlands soon. Take care.

No group on earth has so influenced me ever. As I write this Allison is singing "Cloudless" just for me. No one around. Just perfect.
In the 10 or more years I know you guys, every concert in 100 miles from here, I have visited. I think you have the most beautiful voice and you presence is magical.

First time I saw you was in Ahoy (Rotterdam, NL). Never heard of Cranes before. You did a terrific show, just before The Cure did. Bought two albums days after that amazing concert (Wings of Joy and Forever) and I've never forgotten you since then. I hope you come to Holland again. If you want to go to Bjørn first (I have to say, Norway is the most beautiful country in the world) than that's fine. I understand that. See you there! Greetings, Edwin

When Cranes started the euro tour 2004 from Finland, I watched the first gig in Helsinki and then traveled to watch the third gig in Jyväskylä too :) It was WONDERFUL!
I stumbled at a live version of Lillies in youtube today, and remembered the song from those gigs. The version today is truly great and I prefer it a lot to the cd version.
I just wish we could somehow have the recent version in a better quality, since it's not on the Live in Italy -cd either. Truly unbelievable <3<3<3

Hola!!!
I thought to write this in english but i think Alison likes spanish :-)
My best wishes, see ya!

It is too bad you are not playing on some of the summer festivals in the region. It would be great to see you on Exit. I recently found out about you after an interview with Tripnotic in a local magazine. He answered the question about remixing other people's music and said he had the luck to remix a track by "the fantastic Cranes". I searched for the release, then went for the original and continued exploring your music. I am overwhelmed by emotions flowing from your tunes. I hope I will be able to see you live some day.

I got into Cranes by a critic published in a newspaper about a show they did at Club Soda.
I think it was in 1995 or 1996. Then I tried to find their album *Loved* in every cd store in town, and I didn't find (at this time, I didn't live in Montreal). So, when I came in Montreal (in 2000) I bought the cd *Loved* without listening it before. At my first listening, I immediately liked it. Every song. I had to have more. So now I do have the cassette Fuse, the vinyl Self non self, the cd self no self, cd wings of Joy, vinyl Wings of Joy, cd Forever, vinyl Forever, Cd Forever remixes, cd Loved, cd Tragedie d'oreste et electre (what a nice record), Population four, Ep collection, Future songs, Single Submarine, single Lillies Cranes live intaly, Particles and Waves, Live at Paradiso, Clear remix 12 inch, and I'm waiting right now for the album of Michael J with who Alison did a song, and I'm also waiting ford Trash Palace (for the song your sweet love). I think they are genious, they are the best band I've never heard (my records collection counts over 2000 titles ) I still have the critic review from 1996 that got my interest for the band.
I hope one day they will come back in Montreal, and I can't wait to buy the new cd.
And I hope they will put some more goodies on their site. (and a DVD would be welcome)

Long time, no see. Almost five years, I believe. My husband and I met at your last gig in Mexico City, and now our one-year-old baby falls asleep listening to the Moon City, Cloudless, and many other tender and lovely songs that we like. You'll always be very special to us, guys. We look forward to listening to your latest album, and of course, attending a concert here in Chilangolandia (aka Mexico City).

Heard about from a friend, they were so different and tallented that I could not help but become a fan. Wonderfully different and emotionally robust music that I had never before heard poured out of thier performances. I saw them at the El Rey in the Los Angeles area and it was one of the best performances that I had ever experienced in my life! Anyone who is able to see this group live must attempt it.

hey alison, jim and all the other cranes.
thanx for the paradiso album. what a surprise to find it on your lovely site. you've been my dear friends since a friend of mine taped self-non-self for me early 1990. must have seen you live about 15 times in the early 90s. was there in amsterdam too. i'm particularly pleased to find "slow song" on the album. i have that track on a tape my friend recorded during that tour. but after 17 years it is now slowly dying (the tape i mean).
is there a chance that you are going too please me and all the other "old" (and new)cranes fans with some more material via the download section. i'm stil looking for a good recording of the peel sessions, especially the beautiful "til tomorrow". and perhaps the "moon city" 7 inch. you would make me a very happy man.
it's a pity we have to wait until the autumn for the new album, i'm a bit impatient...haha.
please do keep up your lovely work,
cheers and kisses

I desperately hope that someone who can do something would read this one day, here goes...
Here in Serbia there are people living. Yes, real people! I and a lot of people here get the notion that everyone else thinks of us as some gun toting illiterate terrorists, animals and whatnot. This is not some political attack, but a desperate wail. I love Cranes, we love Cranes and many other bands who never came. Croatia, Hungary (well, maybe not), Romania, Bulgaria... these are all countries like mine. Just one or two concerts in these countries could cover all of them, and make so many people happy. Other than that, in my opinion, Cranes are one of the best European bands in last decade or two.
p.s. for someone to go to Italy, Austria etc. from here to see a concert, it costs more than a monthly salary (average Serbian)(and there's a fifty-fifty chance of getting a visa), but on the other hand, if someone from Italy, Austria etc. were to come here they would need maybe a fifth of theirs at most (and they just get on a train and go wherever they want)... There were Sonic Youth fans here (in Belgrade) from Belgium...

I got into Cranes because my brother had seen you as a supporting act for the cure, over here in Zurich. He brought home the album "wings of joy" and we IMMMMMMEEEEDIATLY fell in love with the intense, strange, highly original, very touching music of yours. We even sorta build up a little Cranes-Community over here. To be honest, some people really hated us for listening to this "unhappy" music. From then on, I kept digging your albums, FOREVER to me is... one of the best pieces of music that any human being could have given birth to. You really made my day. And The CRANES were the biggest inspiration for me when I started my own band "Mrs. Youza". When we saw you playing in the "DYNAMO" in Zurich, we were blown away by how funny and sincere you folks were on stage, that was really cool as everyone was expecting you guys would be dressed completly in black and stuff. I feel kinda very close to you. Keep up the action!

can´t tell u how much the Cranes ment to me since I first saw them on tour with the cure 92. no, it begun with a video of starblood i think. Im thirty now and still re-discovers them in cycles. wings of joy, sigh... i lost them a bit at tangled up though, maybe it was me, but i think we´re back together now. So glad was I when I woke up and found that they were still alive and I still love them. magic trust and life their music are.

Just one week ago, I started listening to the cranes for the first time ever. And from the beginning of the very first second on, I was totally impressed by this kind of music. It's very touching, catchy, full of passion, inspiring and totally different from everything I've ever heard before. With my words, I sadly cannot describe/express exactly what I feel while listening to your lovely music. But it's just great, it's like magic and emotionally to me, if you know what I mean.
My most favourite songs at the moment are "Beautiful Sadness" and "Everywhere". I could listen to these songs the whole day long, without a single break. I'm so glad, that I checked out the Cranes music, and I think it's a shame, that I haven't known them already before. Because a few years ago there was a Cranes concert at the Kulturfabrik in Krefeld, Germany (only 25 kilometres away from my home) - and this would have been the perfect opportunity for me to see the Cranes live. I hope you'll come back to Germany again, someday.
I really enjoy all the nice songs and sounds, and I really love the vocals also. I definetly intend to buy all Cranes CDs that I can come accross in the near future. I really love your albums "Forever" and "Wings Of Joy", and I'm sure I'll also like your other albums and songs. I will promise to check out your new album too, very very soon, and leave my thoughts about it here, in this guestbook.
Thanks for all the beautiful music and the inspiration. Keep on the nice work and visit Germany as soon as possible, so that I can be part of one of your shows too. ;) Finally, thanks for everything, especially for the very touching music.
Yours sincerely,
Patrick Horn

First heard Cranes when I found a lost discman in a classroom that had Forever in it. That was back in 1995. I loved that disc, but then also lost it somewhere along the way a year or so later! Never picked up another Cranes record until last week, when I bought Particles and Waves at a local record shop on a whim. Its a beautiful record, I'm really loving it, and am now planning on buying more Cranes stuff very very soon! Thank you for the music!

No matter how much my music tastes change, Cranes have also been in my CD player. I remember when I met Alison and Jim at a secret Cure gig in London and we got drunk (well me anyway) My friend and I could'nt speak for ages after, we where lost for words.
The funniest thing is, one night I took a video of Scarbough Ahoy! (a film Cranes did the soundtrack for) around to my boyfriend's house, he had wanted to go out an meet a actor friend of his, but he stayed in with me. Anyway I put of the film and there was my boyfriend's actor friend in the film!!!
beautiful memories, thanks Cranes

I'm currently backpacking through Australia, when a friend from the US sent me a sample song from a cd I "have to buy!"... So I gave it a listen, and I must admit, yes, I most definately do!
I don't know what it is, but the music is beautiful. It's something I can sit down to, and just loose myself for a few hours. It's amazing! (don't drive while you listen to this, you WILL cause an accident)
I'm embarassed to say I'm english and had never heard of you, but that's about to change. I've sent the sample song to quite a few of my mates whom I know will dig this, along with a link to your site for details on how to get the cd's. Most live in places where I'd be very surprised if the shops had the cd's.
Still, they should. This is really amazing music.

First time I ever heard Cranes was 1992 at Globen-arena, Stockholm Sweden.
Acting as a warm-up band for The Cure, holy cow, they were outstanding.
I should really appreciate a consert in Sweden in 2006, long time no see.
Missed a couple of gigs but it won´t happen again.....

I have been listening to Cranes since WINGS OF JOY and I adore them. I think the musical arrangements - coupled with Ali's childlike vocals - create an aura of otherworldliness. Are they Goth? I don't know; I just enjoy their ethereal tones that seem to float and hover so hauntingly in my cranium. What an amazing band.
I love PARTICLES AND WAVES; this band can do no wrong.
I hope that Cranes stop in Milwaukee next year when they tour the new record. I don't think they have ever played our city. I would love to see them live.
I hope that Ali and Jim continue to create music that is as delicate, melancholic and lovely as all their previous releases. My best to them, the band and all you fans...

First got into Cranes when Napster was around. My friend "Pip" was like, you gotta check these guys out. So I did and I fell in love with them. I admit I downloaded a lot of the songs, but that was back when I was broke. I have since bought every album I've come across in the real world (I don't buy CD's online).
I would really love it if the Cranes did a US tour again soon. I guess they had one planned but it didn't happen. I'm in Utah and the closest they ever come is Denver, CO. It'd be sweet if they could get a gig in Las Vegas as I have a place to stay there, but whatever. I'll drive to Denver if I have to. ;)

In 1997, I was traveling by Europe when, luckily, I saw a poster that announced a concert in Milan, that same day. I'm from Chile, South america, the other side of the world, so when I saw that poster I knew that I would never have that opportunity again. I run looking for that club in Milan (¿rainbow, maybe?) to see you, CRANES, live. The concert was incredible. Since that night, Cranes is one of my beloved bands.
By a time, I thought that Cranes were extinct, but then "future songs" came out, different but the same, Cranes had returned, for my delight!!.
Now, a new album that I haven't heard, anyway, good luck and keep doing this wonderful art.

I just saw this on the official Cure-site: "Belgium... CRANES! and... "
Does anyone here knows what this means??? Is it possible that The Cranes will accompagny The Cure in Lokeren on the 10th of August?
I'll post this on the Cure-forum as well and will let you know something if there's more to say...

I've been a Cranes addict since Wings of Joy since a swedish friend of mine introduced me to it through a mix-tape. I rwally like the new album but have the feeling that it needs to brew with me a little longer, I'm an old-school fan so the songs from that era have more memories attached to them compared to the new stuff, so my initial thoughts will be that the first couple of discs were better. But I'm pretty sure that Particles & Waves just needs to sit with me a little longer to really crystalize :)
I saw the amsterdam show last night (27th of may 2005), although the sound was pretty bad the first half of the show it was really fucking wonderful to Cranes live again since an almost 10 year hiatus. It was great chatting with Alison for a while after the show, very nice meeting you!
So come back quickly :)

I was happy to see you guys plan a US tour this fall. I joined the mailing list to keep informed as to whether you'll play a venue in either Southwestern PA or Ohio. That would be great since I haven't seen the band since you played Boston where I used to live. I also read an interview Allison gave where she mentioned a band called Mogwai. I checked them out and loved them.
As a musician I find your music inspiring and freeing. I like the fact that you continue to explore and extend your music and don't fall into the trap of repeating your past. Each time I hear your music and how its evolving I'm delighted.
Do you ever posks are on the Bobblehead album? I can't seem to find any information on this album. I always see it for sell on Amazon.com and other sites, but I have never heard of it before.
I cannot wait for the USA tour starting this September 2005. I'm moving to Charlotte, NC. Hopefully, the Cranes will be playing near there.

Hi all, I saw my first Cranes show in Leipzig/Germany in 1994. Since that time I never got "Paris or Rome" out of my head. 11 years later I rediscovered the band and the wonderful new album in Switzerland. Further I love the witty idea to display the songs as a periodic system on "Particles & Waves" - Great!

Gorgeous website! It's really spiffy that you give high quality mp3s. Mayyybe just maybe you might add a lyrics section someday! (^_^) but in the mean time, I'm loving it :D You're one of the best bands out of the 90s and it's always a joy to know that you're still making thought-provoking, evolving music for my brain.

Ich bin schon seit vielen Jahren ein Fan dieser phantastischen Band. Vor allem die Stimme ist wohl unvergleichlich, irgendwie Engelhaft.. Leider war es mir bislang vergönnt, Euch mal live zu sehen! I love this band. My brother turned me onto them because I said I wanted to hear a female singer who sang beautiful and strong. He said," you'll probably like this band. the girl has a such a youthful voice. i listen to it when i go to sleep." the album I have on a blank tape is "Wings of Joy". I absolutely love it. Until tonight I knew nothing about the Cranes or where they are from. I listen to this album over and over. I sew fairy oriented clothing and play this in the background when I sew. Thank you Cranes for a most beautiful atmosphere your music creates in my mind.

Dear Cranes!
Thank U for Particles&waves! I´ve been trying to get the album for such a long time now, but it was impossible in Sweden.. Lucky me when a good friend of me recently came back from London and had bought the album for me! I´ve been listening to it for a couple of days now and i think the album just grows and grows! The title song, Av A, light song and Astronauts are fantastic songs! Well, the hole album is fantastic! And now the BIG question, when are you coming to Gothenburg Sweden and play??? Lots of love to the Cranes from Sweden.

And due to techno-illiteracy, combined with wine consumption, I realised that my previous message relocated myself to the other side of the world. Alas I am in fact here, living by the sea, in the lovely UK.

Hi all,
Hmmmm...I'm not entirely sure how I ended up posting here tonight? Let's see...
As of 3 hours ago, I turned 38 years of age ( 'happy birthday to me' etc ) which, combined with a very nice bottle of wine has, I guess, put me in a slightly reflective mood. These things tend to happen at this 'stately' time of life. For no apparent reason, I started digging through my cd collection for recordings that meant a lot to me, and so found myself listening to Loved.
This cd takes me back to a time when I was living in Northampton, playing music with a loose collecive of fantastically talented and interesting people, regularly bumping into Alan Moore in the pub, drawing comic-books ( this part of my life hasn't changed ) and drinking in all of life's rich experiences.
I checked about online, stumbled across this site, and felt the urge to record this evening by leaving a small message here. So that's it really...thank you to Alison et al for bringing back a few sweet memories.
Take care,
SimonColeby

OK, I am pretty pathetic. I have just now been turned on to your music. One of my friends gave me your CD "LOVED" but being unfamiliar with it, I just stuck it in my CD case between Camouflage & The Cure. I have always meant to listen to it but being stuck in a rut, I listened to my usuals like Anything Box & Depeche Mode. It wasn't until last week when I was preparing for an upcoming set on the radio show that I DJ for that I ran across your CD again. I decided to give it a listen. And let me just say...wow! I'm angry with myself for not giving the Cranes the attention they deserved a few years back. I love the CD! The songs "Are You Gone?" & "Beautiful Friend" are by far my faves but the entire album is awesome! I look forward to finding more albums.
BTW, who would I need to talk with about playing a few songs on-air?
New & forever fan,
~Alisha

I got into the Cranes when I was about 16 years - I'm just got 30 now.
I've been following them since then and got the chance to see them only (oh pity!) twice.
Once as the openers for The Cure in Ghent, Belgium (90's) and recently in Brussels (also Belgium).
>> Weird things happen, the concert in Brussels in Belgium (last one for the Future Songs Album) was really great, small room, the music was well played, the sound at itself was great and the band brought what it brought.
I was astonished and very pleased to hear that the music of The Cranes was (still) able to move me - it has the effect on me as if every minute you hear them, a minute of peace gets into my heart - even if they start to sow the creepy weird noises into their palet. Because all that, that's your hart.
>> After the concert, J. Shaw came down to have a small drink with the guys at the bar and the crowd and she really tried (at least, that was my impression :-) to talk to one of us of the crowd at the bar - but she was apparently (very) shy.
But, so were we.
Very.
Astonished and still trying to find the words for describing what we had felt - to each other.
So, she - unlucky for us - disappeared...
May peace be with you - every minute.
;-))
(Thanks to the band for doing what they do - try to do - keep on doing - would like to do - ...)
Anyways, ;-)
Does anybody has any idea where I can find the lyrics of the album 'Particles & Waves'?
I'm very curious.
Thanks...

No he vuelto a saber nada de ella. La última noticia es que quería ir avivir a Portugal para montar un "tinglado", como ella decía.
Donde quiera que estés, un beso tan grande como un camión cargado de pianos.

I was very excited when buying your new album, and though it doesn't sound like what most of your fans were amuf your fans were amused by at the very beginning, I think that this evolution is very peculiar and still has your very own style. I feel touched when listening to it.

just read some great stuff about your own support band now: "GLORIA from Germany bring intensive soundscapes and arrangements together with songwriting which includes bittersweet melodies and strong pictures. They have been compared to Sigur Ros, Interpol and Mogwai.." sounds good, really curious on them as well!

I literally fell in love with the cranes when a friend from belgium gave me "wings of joy", back in 1998.
then life took me away from all the things i love (cranes included), but when this year I started listening to their music again it was just like meeting an old friend who's been away for years but who can still make you feel better and remind you of good times spent together
thanx to the cranes for being the wonderful soundtrack of some of the best moments in my life

Hej!
I was just wondering if you are thinking of ever coming back to Örebro, Sweden. I was to young to visit your last show here, many years ago....
Or somewhere else in Sweden maybe?
I wish....

We had a lesson (French) about the Cranes once in the secondary school. Nobody in the class knew who the Cranes were, i didn't either. After that lesson, my teacher gave me the cd 'loved'. And I found it very, very beautiful. Fantastic. Espacially 'Paris and Rome'. Also the fact that Cranes supported The Cure in 1993 (I think) made me curieus because I like The Cure very much. I started looking on the Cranes-website and searching for cds, but these are hard to find in Belgium. I never had the chance to see you because the VK is too far from where I live. So I hope to see you very soon somewhere in the neighbourhood. (And I'm sorry for all the mistakes).

I luv the Cranes. I walked into my college radio station where i like to chill alot, and a girl was playing them- i asked, "who is this!" and she gave me the cd to keep b/c the station always gets many promotional cd's in. I was thankful that i found it b/c i didn't feel like sorting through the hundreds of cd's for something good. I luv the mellow beats of the music- and the kewl girl's voice. I have to read more about them b/c i just discovered them the other day. If anyone else knows any music artists that are similar to the cranes with that mellow synth sound, send me some names pleaz! Thanx,

Discovered Cranes on a dusty shelf at GrayWhale CD, probably non existent now, in Salt Lake City, Uhah, of all places in 1991. The 9.95 used import price stickeer is still on the outside cover. Did you guess "Wings of Joy". You are correct. The Cure came to the Delta Center in June of 1992 and Cranes opened. If you were there you might remember me, seriously, I was the only one on the floor standing. Other than a Mercury Rev show, this was the loudest show I remember. From opening note to end, the power in their music was awesome. Sadly, I did not see them when they made a Seattle stop in 2002. One band I would love to see again. Most bands don't know how to compose loud music much less play it live. See Lilies from "Loved". I am still surprised Cranes have not been used in more films.

Well where can I start, a good one is I consider myself a true almost die-hard Cranes fan. Ok I am.
Luckily enough my cousin kinda introduced myself to all this great music way back when, so I took his word and picked up the Forever Lp. And from then on... you guys have had me. Thanks for creating such amazing, beautiful, crafty music, please keep it coming. One of these days,(hopefully soon) I'll have the chance to actually find Particles and Waves, its still only an import and like non-existent here in Toronto. Will you be coming to North America anytime soon? My life would be complete as I am yet to see you live, Live from Paris and Rome, shows how a tight group the Cranes are, i can't wait! Take care.

Hi there,
Just wanted to let you know how much my friend Laura and I enjoyed the gig at the Norwich Arts Centre last week (Sept.6th). I've see Cranes play a few times before, but Laura knew very little of your music and it was so good to see her getting caught up in a band that I've loved for nearly fifteen years. Big thanks to Ali (still a goddess, sigh!)for signing our copies of 'Particles & Waves' and thanks again for a truly memorable night.

I discovered the Cranes on tour with the Cure in 1993. I remember leaving the gig and thinking what an amazing sound! I went and bought "Forever", and that was it - I was hooked. I've just seen them at the Arts Centre in Norwich (Sept 6th). Met Ali and made a fool of myself trying to explain my rainsoaked holiday near Southsea - thankfully I was drowned out by "The Dears" who were supporting at the time, so I think I got away with it! Was far too star-struck by the end of the gig to talk to any of the band. I love the Cranes, it's wonderful to see them live, and I particularly enjoy the "heavier" stuff. The new album is great too. I'll shut up now!

Tuesday at the ICA was the best I've ever seen the Cranes over the years. They really looked like they enjoyed it as well. Thanks again for a great night.

Went to see your gig at the ICA last night-one of the best I have ever seen. Don't really know your music that well but enjoyed every minute of it. Never have seen a band who enjoyed the gig as much as you seemed to. Thanks for a great night. Will definitely have to buy all of your other albums now as I only have the new one.

I'm 19 years old and love metal and rock music but .... I was watching a film called Wicked about two years ago and heard this really cool dark haunting music... had to check it out. It was the cranes! Since then i've got 9CDS by them. The whole band rocks.
I went to see them last night in Bristol and they were amazing live. Ali appeared to be all shy, until she got singing that is and then she was all smiles. Her voice is really good for sparking emotion, its almost hypnotising. Jon was well into his drumming , expecially the drum rolls in one track off the new album. Ben had his eyes closed some of the time , but you could tell he was loving the atmosphere. Jim got well into the rythem guitar parts, and paul..... well that solo in Adrift has damn cool. Fitted great and was absolutly crazy. A good way finish to a excellent gig. Cheers for playing driving in the sun btw , that song is kinda personal to me so it was great to hear it!
Got to meet ali at the end, shes a lovely lady. Was the highlight of the gig meeting her, but that solo does come close ! Met jim too, he was funny to talk to, maybe cos he was kinda wasted... :)
I think the new album is excellent, I hope you guys tour again soon.
Thanks for inspiring me and broadening my taste in music
Cheers

I got into Cranes on the computer. I had somehow downloaded a radiostation and they were playing on it. When the vocals started to drip through, I started crying. I called my best friend and cried on the phone with her for almost an hour. Ali's voice infects me with so much emotion and so much innocence. Because I live in the United States and pretty much everyone I know hasn't heard of Cranes, I have neverCranes, I have never been able to see them play. I would really love to though. I had to go all the way to Tennessee to find some CDs of theirs. If it is possible, I would love to see a show somewhere near New York, my home state. I would really appreciate that, almost as much as I appreciate all the beautiful music Cranes has produced over the years. -Joshua Henry Koonz followtheleft.cjb.net

When is Particles & Waves going to be released for us non-gig-goers?
Ordered it on Amazon, first it was going to be June 04, then July, now August.
Champin' at the bit . . .
I read somewhere that Dedicated truly shafted Cranes over the EP Collection Vols. 1 & 2, apparently they receive no royalties for it, so no matter how many copies are sold, none of the band make any money from it (not sure why?). If this is true, take 'em to court!
It is also quite impossible to get new copies of Self-Non-Self, Wings Of Joy, or Population 4 anywhere for any money (not happy with 2nd hand myself). Amazon say "limited availability" (which means: forget it). Why is this, have they been deleted? More problems with Dedicated I guess . . . any plans to reissue them on Dadaphonic, or would the legal bill for ownership of the master tapes be too expensive?
Lastly, I keep hearing critics/fans compare Cranes to Cocteau Twins. I remember reading a review of "Loved" in the All Music Guide, wherein the critic said that "In The Night" was "very Cocteau-esque" or words to that effect. I'm a 'Twin fan, but can't really hear that much of a similarity to be honest. I'd put both bands into the same genre - loosely - say, Dream Pop/Shoegazer/Goth, but track for track they are very different.
Opinions?

Hi Cranes !
I've really enjoyed the latest gig i went to ! I first saw you in 'sHertogenbosch in the Netherlands almost 2 weeks ago, and (since it has been 2 years since you last played over here) it was a great gig. I heard the new songs for the first time, and i aspecially like "particles and waves". Bought the new CD right away, and got it signed by Ben and Ali. Alison appeared to be a ill a little, so she couldn't make the really high notes, but still... :-)
Last night i was in La Locomotive in paris and that show was REALLY AWESOME !!! Ali's voice was in perfect shape, and the crowd got wild ! Why is it that the crowd in the Netherlands is always so tame ? DON'T BE ! You get rewarded with 2 extra encore's on top of the planned one like in Paris ! The band really enjoyed the gig; you could tell... And the fans gathered were really pleased to see them again ! (like me... ;-)
See you again in Ekko/Utrecht (and possibly LVC as well) !
(Personal thank you to Ali: thanks for putting me on the Paris-guestlist ! And thanks for the handshake... hmmm; i'll never wash that hand again ;-)

Appearantly, Ali was ill during the Dutch gig, but I didn't notice any of that during the Brussels gig.
I didn't really like the support act. During the support act Ali and Jim where in the audience as well ! I had a very little chat with Ali during that. Thanks !

Hi All,
Went to see Cranes in Holland (May 21st, 's-Hertogenbosch). Very good gig it was, too, although Alison had a bit of a sore throat, which may well have forced the band to shorten the gig.
NOTE : spoilers coming up - if you're gonna see them soon and
you don't want to know what they might play - stop reading NOW!)
They started off with a number of classic songs such as Shining Road, always great crowd pleasers. After that they switched to a number of keyboard-oriented songs, including a few from Particles & Waves and the two leading tracks from Future Songs. Especially new song Vanishing Point sounded excellent. Some more older songs after that, and an explosive new song which I thought was the title track of their album. I can't be quite sure about those new tracks - they sold the album at the gig (and I got mine signed by Ali - Ha!) but of course at the concert I hadn't heard them yet. Alison took the guitar
as well for Lilies, and they did an encore finishing off with a sizzling rendition of what might well be their most fantastic song ever: Adrift.
I really had a great time, and if you only so much as like the band you should not hesitate and immediately plan to go to one of their concerts. Just hearing the legendary Adrift played live is easily worth it!
Set list: Everywhere; Loved; Shining Road; Light Song; Avenue A; Future Song; Submarine; Vanishing Point; Jewel; Far Away; Particles & Waves; Lilies. Encore: Cloudless; Adrift.

just wondering if the band reads this to get feedback, or not!? ...anyway, i just got home from the concert in Logo, Hamburg. it was a spontanious idea to go since i wouldn´t really class myself as a fan. i saw them the first time supporting the Cure in 92 and even bought a cd at the time. i took the cd to work so i could listen to it more often but our clients in the salon thought it a little too depressing and i had to keep turning it off! ...some people just don´t know what´s good for them. ;-) anyhow, it was a really, really nice concert and tomorrow at work i´ll get the cd rotating again. thank you very much for a beautifull evening and come back soon! best wishes. Mark.
ps.: Alison, looking at the older photos on this site the last 10 years don´t seem to have left any trace on you! :-)

Thank you CRANES for a great gig at Jyvaskyla in Finland ( 14.5.2004 ). I enjoyed it VERY much. I saw them last time here in Finland when they were supporting The Cure in 1992. So it´s been a long time and I never thought I would see them again. But sometimes strange things happen and I´m soooo glad it happened here in my hometown. It just feels so awkward when you see a band in a place which is so close to you. It was just like having Cranes in your living room!! When you go and see a gig at the stadium it can be great but the distance between you and the band is always there. All the connections you have with the band are the albums at your home. I think the distance is good because you can form your own feelings when listening the albums. But back to the point.. The gig was great of course and i was in heaven. I just standed there and surrended myself to the music. Before the gig I had a chance to have a few words with Alison. My heart was beating so fast but I did manage to mumble something. Alison was so great and kind and she answered to my few guestions and she signed my copy of "Wings of joy". There was a chance to buy " Particles and wawes" first hand. The cd´s were shipped to Finland by a courier the day before so we are very priviledged to have it before the official release date. And now a piece of advice.. BUY IT !! IT´S GREAT. I had to ask Alison to sign my copy of P & W also... :) But thank you again CRANES and Alison !! I have always loved your music but now I love it even more if possible. Best regards from the shy boy with a suit, a ponytail and black edged eyeglasses.. And as you said at the end of your gig. " I hope to see you again ".

About 5 years ago my husband and I heard them on a local radio station called Bats in the Belfry. We have been hooked ever since. We saw them when they came to Boston [USA] in 2002. We are truely faithful fans and anxiously await their return. However, we are now thinking of taking a trip to Europe to see them. We tried for London but the tickets were sold out. We have not yet heard the new album but we will be sure to pick it up. And there is no doubt in our minds that this new album will be just as spectacular as the others.

I got into Cranes through my interest in Shoegazer/Dreampop music (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins etc) & my interest in Classic UK Indie (The Cure, The Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen etc) - mainly from browsing related sites on the Net. Decided to buy Futures Songs & Forever one day in Oxford Street HMV, London. I was stunned to start with at how incredibly dark the music is - like "Pornography" or "Faith" by The Cure, but with TUNES (no offence, Robert!). Future Songs sounded a lot like "Dummy" by Portishead the first few times aswell (a compliment in my opinion). Then I got Loved; got EP 1&2 last week - put it on right in the middle of a come-down (oops!) but I give it 5 out of 5. Seems you can't get Wings Of Joy for love or money anymore (gutted). Looking forward to Particles & Waves, must get Live In Italy too. I'd call them a Goth band but this is no bad thing - Goth in the tradition of This Mortal Coil or the 'Twins, I mean. Cracking voice, sexy front-woman, the musical equivalent of the Ariel poems by Sylvia Plath m'thinks. Right up there with The Smiths as my favourite band of all time. Keep it coming, u got a fan here xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
